Nine killed, 12 injured in suicide blast in Kabul

PESHAWAR, 09 March: At least nine people were killed and 12 injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a Shia mosque in the Afghan capital, Kabul on Friday, officials said.

Nasrat Rahimi, the spokesman for the interior ministry said the suicide bomber targeted a gathering near the Al-Zahra mosque, commemorating the death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari, a former leader of Shia Hazara community. Mazari was killed by the Taliban in 1995. Rahimi said that security officials were also among the injured.

Government officials said that the suicide bomber was trying to reach the gathering being held near the mosque, however, security personnel stopped him at the first check post where he blew himself up.

According to media reports, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
