PESHAWAR, 11 June: A non-government organization working for the rights of children has urged the government to hold a countrywide survey to get the actual status on child labor in the country.

Speaking at a news conference here at Peshawar press club, SPARC’s Peshawar chapter manager Jehanzeb Khan said as many as 168 million children are engaged in one or other form of child labor all over the world, adding, in Pakistan the number of children forced to do labor is approximately 12 million.

Quoting statistics of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Department of Education Jehanzeb Khan said there are 2.6 million children in the province who are not attending schools. He added that out of these, 70 percent kids who are under 15 years of age, are laboring in restaurants and auto workshops.

“The previous survey was conducted 20 years ago. It is our demand that the government should hold a countrywide survey to ascertain the actual number of working children. Once the actual number of working children is ascertained, only then we can devise a future plan for the welfare of the children,” he argued.
