Five dead, several missing as bridge collapses in Neelum Valley

PESHAWAR: About 40 tourists fell into River Neelum in Kundal Shahi area of Azad Jammu and Kashmir as the pedestrian bridge on the river on collapsed on Sunday.

Media reports said the bridge fell when the tourists gathered on it for enjoying the scenic beauty of the river and taking pictures. Rescue operation was immediately launched in the area to save the tourists. Besides police and Army personnel, the local people and volunteers are taking part in the operation to save the lives of tourists.

According to latest reports, five bodies have been recovered from the river, while at least 14 people were rescued. The remaining tourists were still missing till filing of this report and hectic efforts were continuing to save their lives.

Local people said tourists had come from different places, mostly from Punjab, and the victims also include women and students.

The Muzaffarabad deputy commissioner confirmed that more than 40 people fell into the water. He said a control room has been set up to oversee the rescue work. AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider took notice of the incident and sought a report from the relevant officials.

Neelum Valley is a popular tourist spot, especially in summer, where a large number of people from different parts of Pakistan and also from other countries arrive to enjoy scenic beauty and lovely weather.
