CHITRAL: The colourful three-day Chilimjusht spring festival is continuing at the scenic Bamburate, Birir and Rumbur valleys in Chitral.

The Tourism Corporation Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TCKP) has established a tent village for tourists coming to enjoy the festival.

The festival started with ‘Milkday’ on Monday on which Kalasha people offer milk that had been saved for 10 days prior to the occasion. The event signifies end of chilling cold in the mountainous region and the people celebrate the arrival of spring and summer seasons.

Small kids wear new clothes and they are baptized. The ceremony of a baptism of kids is called Pich Injek while a young men sprinkles milk on the newborns and their mothers.

During Chilimjusht, houses are decorated and the Kalash people wear new clothes that are specifically prepared for the occasion. The main feature of the festival is a selection of life partner for unmarried boys and girls.

Besides people from different parts of the country, a number of foreign tourists have also arrived in Chitral to enjoy Chilimjusht. A local tourist information centre has been set up to facilitate the tourists and give them required information.

To the Kalasha the festival is the culmination of religious life and, like the big funerals, they unite the people.
