Cabinet approves tabling Fata reforms bill in NA

PESHAWAR: In a landmark development, the federal cabinet Thursday approved presenting the Fata reforms bill in the National Assembly.

The decision was taken by the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at the Prime Minister Office. The federal government went ahead with the decision despite opposition from its key allies — Jamiat Ulema-e Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP).

The bill will be tabled in the National Assembly today (Friday). The approval of the bill will facilitate the merger of Fata with KP.

Besides the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the main opposition parties Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will also vote for the bill. Media reports said Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq sought the consent of opposition parties for the bill immediately after the cabinet meeting.

It will be a huge development for Fata after extension of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Peshawar High Court (PHC) jurisdiction to Fata.

The cabinet meeting as a whole discussed a 12-point agenda.

The meeting approved an agreement between Pakistan and Russia on the settlement of mutual financial claims and obligations on operations of the former USSR, an amendment in the policy of commercial import of arms and ammunitions. The cabinet has also decided to place National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) under the PMO, an amendment in Section 5 and Section 6 of the Pemra Ordinance, 2002 as Amended vide Pemra (Amendment) Act, 2007.
