PESHAWAR, 1 January: At least 39 people were killed and over 40 others sustained injuries in a terrorist attack on people celebrating New Year night at a night club in Turkey’s most populous city, Istanbul.

Media reports said an armed man opened fire at the club, while some reports said two gunmen opened fire shortly after midnight when about 700 people were present at the night club. A number of people saved their lives by jumping into a nearby river.

Security was on high alert in Istanbul on the New Year night and 17,000 security personnel were deployed in the city as part of security measures.

The night club is located near the soccer stadium where recent suicide attacks killed dozens.
