BRICS declares LeT, JeM responsible for violence in region
September 05, 2017

PESHAWAR, 5 September: BRICS, an organisation of five countries including India, Russia, China, Brazil and South Africa have for the first time bracketed Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taebbya (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) responsible for violence in the region.

The joint statement of the 9th BRICS session in China also called for strict action against elements involved in terrorism and those providing help or support to them. The organisation vowed to continue war against terrorism.

The meeting also urged the need for immediate end to ongoing war in Afghanistan. BRICS strongly criticised Taliban, Haqqani Network, Islamic State, East Turkestan Islamic Movement, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Lashkar-e-Taebbya, JeM, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Hizbut Tahrir for spreading violence in the region.

Earlier, China had not included Pakistan-based militant organisations in the joint statement. This is the first time anti-India groups such as LeT and JeM have been named in a BRICS declaration.
